You must read this book! The writing is so lovely and lyrical – hard to describe, but in parts it’s sort of like a sing-songy child channeling the Bible. And Sendak’s illustrations are appropriately Chagall -like.

Always love to see Sendak’s older illustrations. I think I read somewhere that he wasn’t given a chance to do his ‘own book’ until he’d been doing illustrations for others for more than 10 years.

He did illustrate a lot of books by other authors early in his career, including several by Ruth Krauss which are among my all-time favorite picture books!
